Nephelokokkygia (Cloud Cuckoo Land)

Under the title “Nephelokokkygia” (or “Cloud Cuckoo Land”), conceptual artist Effrosyni Kontogeorgou populated the exhibition space of Galerie Mitte in Bremen with 20 pigeons. Her site-specific installation allowed exhibition visitors to observe the resident pigeons from behind the scenes.

For the exhibition, we created an installation consisting of individual modules in the style of an amphitheatre. The installation, which was largely adapted to the needs of the pigeons, gave visitors some space under the steps to move around and observe. Although this resulted in significant limitations compared to a conventional gallery visit, it provided completely new and intimate insights into the daily activities of the pigeons.

Does a cloud fit in a suitcase? What noises does a kitchen make? What is a scent organ? Where do you sleep during a polar expedition? What is it that glows in the underground of Frankfurt? Where is the division between gaps and holes? And what happens when 20 pigeons move into a gallery?
