Das Zweite Leben – far-traveled furniture

The FS Meteor is a multi-disciplinary research vessel that has been serving German deep-sea research in the fields of marine geology, marine biology, oceanography and ecology since 1986. After 1,105,604 nautical miles of worldwide research voyages, we gave the old wood of the planked deck a “second life”. The project started on October 4, 2011 with the removal of the old deck.

The design of the furniture and objects is based on the concept of the “second life”. Our aim was not to hide the history of the far-traveled wood – scratches, furrows and traces of years of research work on deck – but to transform it into something new with its inscriptions. Raw and smooth surfaces complement each other, creating an interplay between the old wood and new pieces of furniture.

The proceeds from the sale were donated to children and youth projects in the field of marine environmental education.

Does a cloud fit in a suitcase? What noises does a kitchen make? What is a scent organ? Where do you sleep during a polar expedition? What is it that glows in the underground of Frankfurt? Where is the division between gaps and holes? And what happens when 20 pigeons move into a gallery?
