Oldest Ice – inter­active time travel into the climate past

Time travel is possible – at least in science. At the Alfred Wegener Institute, this is possible thanks to the analysis of ice cores obtained from bore­holes up to several kilo­meters deep in the Antarctic. These make it possible to travel up to 500,000 years into the past of our climate. How­ever, researchers sus­pect that ice up to 1.5 million years old could even exist in the Antarctic – a race has be­gun in the scien­tific com­mu­nity to track down this “Oldest Ice”.

The analog, inter­active exhi­bit “Oldest Ice” allows visi­tors to slip into the role of glaci­olo­gists them­selves and search for the oldest ice in Antarctica. With the help of a true-to-scale model, ice cores can be “pulled” from real drill­ing sites. The col­lec­ted cores can be evalu­ated with an analy­sis chart to re­con­struct the climate curve of the last 500,000 years. The exhi­bit thus con­veys a deeper under­stand­ing of the changes in our global climate and the impor­tance of ice core re­search in a hands-on approach.
