…entscheidend ist auf dem Platz! – sport and integration in Lower Saxony and Germany
Sport demands clear rules: Points, win, lose or draw. The playing field defines a space and the clothing distinguishes between teammates and opponents. The goal is success – depending on the sport, this can mean very different things: Hitting a target accurately, throwing a ball a long way or completing a move harmoniously with a teammate. Integration, on the other hand, is a game whose rules are not always visible. It is a long process whose beginning and end, qualities and characteristics can only be judged subjectively.
Sport creates playgrounds that are needed in society as meeting spaces for integration. Ultimately, the decisive factor in sport and integration is what actually happens: Encounter and engagement, community spirit and competition, criticism and understanding.
With this guiding principle in mind, we realized an exhibition for the Friedland Museum on the subject of “Sport and Integration” in the Nissenhütte on the grounds of the former border transit camp. We divided the exhibition space into two areas: the playground and the locker room.
On the playground, we located the six major thematic areas of the exhibition, which were positioned in relation to each other like athletes on the field. In the locker room, we created a space in which the information we had gathered could be explored in greater depth at extensive reading stations. Behind the doors of the lockers, personal memorabilia could be discovered: trophies, certificates, as well as reports and interviews of former residents of the border transit camp.
