Bike It – an interactive city tour through Bremen

The city of Bremen’s cycling infrastructure includes many kilometers of off-road cycle paths through parks, green spaces and routes on or behind the embankments. In addition, there are 720 kilometers of roadside cycle paths of very different quality. The famous, grey, cold and wet Bremen weather is also unavoidable. Undeterred by this, according to a 2008 study, cycling in Bremen accounted for 26.5% of all journeys made within the city (domestic traffic), which is higher than in most other major German cities. Bremen is therefore often referred to as a “cycling city”.

The best way to experience the city is by biking. With the interactive installation “Bike It!”, the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen invited people to do just that in 2014.

They were able to virtually experience various cycle routes in and around Bremen on a cargo bike we had converted. By pedaling, the riders moved, depending on their speed, sometimes faster, sometimes slower along the sights and picturesque landscapes that Bremen’s cycle paths have to offer. If they stopped at one of these special points, they received further information about the cycle route and the attractions.

Does a cloud fit in a suitcase? What noises does a kitchen make? What is a scent organ? Where do you sleep during a polar expedition? What is it that glows in the underground of Frankfurt? Where is the division between gaps and holes? And what happens when 20 pigeons move into a gallery?
