Dass die Lücken nun Löcher wurden
“Dass die Lücken nun Löcher wurden” (That the gaps have now become holes) was an artistic audio installation in 2013. Five groups of mini speakers with three, four or five speakers were placed in the vast empty exhibition space. The speakers were mounted on elaborately produced, filigree steel constructions. Each of these groups formed a self-sufficient audio collage that interacted with the other ensembles in the exhibition space.
The audio collages were based on two journeys made possible by the H.A. Bockmeyer travelling grant. The first journey was a virtual one. A long, tenacious journey through our world in “Google Street View”. This tool suggests a full representation of our physical world, creating the feeling of having been there before. Despite the endeavour to faithfully depict the physical world, however, gaps arise and exist – non-places in the virtual world. This becomes obvious at the borders of Germany. The gaps appear programmatic, because this is where the views of “Google Street View” end for the time being. Five places along these borders (the Polish, Czech, Dutch, Belgian and French borders) were visited and documented in a second journey in the real world under the impression of the previously practised virtual view.
The five audio collages reflect the experiences of the virtual and real journeys along a deliberately created demolition line, where gaps have now become holes. The constitution of this indeterminate space materialised in the exhibition space. The position and orientation of the groups of speakers in the installation was based on the points of view taken in the virtual world. Gaps and holes in the collages made up from recorded snippets of conversations and ambient noises enabled a sonic experience of the absent.
