A1 5284 – A1 0862 – Rauchwolken und Luftschlösser (Clouds of smoke and castles in the air)

For the work “A1 5284 - A1 0862”, a 16 mm projector was modified so that the footage was shown in single frames instead of 18 frames per second. The individual images – projected onto a wall in the GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst – remained in front of the projector lens until they slowly dissolved due to the heat of the projector lamp. In this way, several metres of the film material were transformed during the exhibition, leaving the actual content only partially recognisable.

The material used was outtakes shot in black and white at the time of the liquidation of the Bremen shipyards. This work doesn’t explicitly deal with the material that is changed by the process. Rather, […] it is about the questions of traces in the material and the limits of perception. […]

“A1 5284 – A1 0862” focuses on the automated process of destroying an original material and the creation of a new image and material level. The content, captured on a medium (celluloid), is radically removed from it. The information consciously stored on the material is inevitably and irretrievably lost. What remains is a roll of celluloid film that now carries new information created by chance.

At the GAK, visitors were able to experience this process image by image. The heat of the projector lamp caused the individual images to ‘blossom’ until only fragments of the actual image remained. In the next step, the ‘destroyed’ 16mm film was shown at 18 frames per second […] and the projection was filmed. The holes and deformations created by the destruction of the original film material now seem to lie parasitically on the actual film material like abstract, animated objects.

Nine metres of the transformed film material, together with a DVD showing the altered film in full length, are available in a limited edition.

Does a cloud fit in a suitcase? What noises does a kitchen make? What is a scent organ? Where do you sleep during a polar expedition? What is it that glows in the underground of Frankfurt? Where is the division between gaps and holes? And what happens when 20 pigeons move into a gallery?
