Gateway – Bremen’s role as a portal to outer space
The United Nations launched World Space Week in 1999. Since then, annual events have been held around the world to showcase space sciences and technologies and their social benefits for people.
As one of the world’s leading space locations, Bremen hosted World Space Week in the historic lower town hall in 2012 as part of its chairmanship of the European network of locations involved in the construction of Ariane. We interpreted Bremen’s role as a portal to outer space in the interactive media installation “Gateway”.
Light gates made of electroluminescent wire showed visitors the way through the venerable Gothic town hall. Visitors were able to pick up postcards along the way with “100 questions about space travel” from the following subject areas: Telecommunications, Bremen as a space location, manned space flight, on-orbit services, exploration, space transportation, navigation and earth observation. Placed on an interactive table, the answers were delivered in multimedia form via an overhead ceiling projection.
More than 10,000 people visited the exhibition over the course of a week.
