Licht am Ende des Tunnels

For the fifth “Luminale” light culture festival, we transformed the Willy-Brandt-Platz underground station in Frankfurt am Main into the stage for an interactive theatre performance. The actors: the passengers themselves. The play: human interaction with and within the public space.

At the entrances to the underground station, markings on the floor showed the way to the theatre stage on the lower intermediate level. The large stairway on this level was transformed into a theatre auditorium with moving stage lights and a LED panel. Passengers were able to activate quotes from current productions of the Schauspiel Frankfurt on the LED panel with their movements. By stepping onto one of the “role fields” marked on the floor, they activated the light, sound and the LED panel.

The “quotation theatre” was generated entirely by people’s movements. The temporary installation played with the everyday flow of passengers in the busy underground station: some come, others go. Sometimes they move quickly, sometimes slowly. Some on their way to work, others on their way back home. Repeated daily or perhaps just once in a lifetime. For a short time, life itself becomes a piece of theatre and the passengers its storytellers.

Does a cloud fit in a suitcase? What noises does a kitchen make? What is a scent organ? Where do you sleep during a polar expedition? What is it that glows in the underground of Frankfurt? Where is the division between gaps and holes? And what happens when 20 pigeons move into a gallery?
